More info
My research interests are all over the area of sound and vibration, including but not limited to Human sound and vibration comfort, machine condition monitoring, acoustics materials and environmental acoustics. I’ve been supervising projects dealing with design optimization, based on studying the modal behavior of structure. Another area of my research is to implement natural fibers as sound absorbers, replacing the synthetic fibers currently being used in sound absorption panels. I’m also interested to harvest energy from vibration and use it to power electrical and electronics devices. My profile on Google Scholar is public here.

Research Interests
  • Materials, polymer, composites materials, manufacturing, nanotechnology
More info
Polymer composites and extrusion: I worked on the extrusion of polymer composites, which is able to provide a faster way of polymer matrix and reinforcement phases mixing process. This has opened an opportunity to adopt the same process in the emerging 3D-printing where customised polymer composites can be produced according to the printing needs. Future research direction will be to explore the feasibility of using polymer composites as a 3D-printing ready materials.

Carbon thin-film and depositions: I worked on the carbon thin- film coating via plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) to produce uniform and nanometers-thick protective layer on a conducting surface. Carbon thin-film, even at a thickness of below 3nm, can acts as a corrosion protection layer and as well as a protective layer against any mechanical contact. Future research direction will be to work on the development of thin-film polymer solar cell.

My research interests are in the polymer composites, particularly biopolymers (biodegradable and biobased polymers), polymer processing and carbon footprint assessment. Prior to join Taylors, I have 5 years working experience as scientific researcher in Texchem Polymer Research Centre, involved in new polymer compound research, scale up activities and biobased product certification.

My current research activities involved utilization of agricultural waste as reinforcement agent in polymer composites. The agricultural waste that I explored including sugarcane bagasse, empty fruit bunch waste, tapioca waste and etc. One of the research objective is to produce a fully biobased composites consists of agricultural waste for thermoforming or injection molding application. The material characterization tests including thermal resistance, mechanical properties, degradation studies, heavy metals test and carbon footprint study.

Industry Experience
Development of biobased material (certified by U.S department of Agriculture) for thermoforming application.

Involved in customer quality audit and internal audit.

span style="font-weight: 700 !important;">Food and Bioproducts Processing: I am working in the field of Food and Bioproducts processing for the last seven years. In this century packed food is inevitable, since it can be stored for longer duration. Currently I am working on few projects to determine the antioxidant potential of Malaysian herbs, plants and fruits which can replace the synthetic antioxidants, later was found to be carcinogenic. Spray drying and novel hybrid drying technology is my focus to produce nanoparticles which in turn can be used in Food and bioproduts and pharmaceutical industry.

Wastewater Treatment: I have an experience of designing the wastewater treatment plant for different scale for Residential and Industrial unit. Recently effluent from the Industry (Malaysia) has been tested and monitored before they discharge the wastewater into river water, lake and reservoir. This is one of the latest project. Besides effluent from the Palm oil effluent treatment plant has also been tested and recommendation was given to further reduce the BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) level. Ultimate aim of these project is to have sustainable environment and provide them for the future generation.

Research Interests
  • synthesis of nanofluids-coolants and lubricants, blend lubricants, tribology, heat transfer, CFD, biopolymer composite membrane, eutectic solvents, biomass pretreatment
More info
Nanofluids are gaining more interest in heat transfer applications due to its enhanced thermal conductivity and heat transfer enhancement properties. Dr Rashmi is working towards producing stable nanofluids which are in homogeneous suspension. The stable suspensions were synthesized either by adding dispersants like natural polysaccharides (Gum Arabic) or by using functionalized nanoparticles. The stability studies are characterized using UV spectrophotometer, centrifuge techniques or zeta potential measurements. Heat transfer properties of nanofluids have also shown more than 250% enhancement with negligible increase in viscosity. The nanoparticles of interest are carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene. Rashmi’s research work is also extended into theoretical modelling and CFD simulations to predict the thermal conductivity and behavior of nanofluids in natural and forced convection systems. Recent work includes utilizing green solvents (deep eutectic solvents) for nanofluids preparation.

Sustainable Process Synthesis and Design, Process Integration and Optimisation: I work on the sustainable process synthesis and design. This research considers several aspects of sustainability. For example, economic aspect (e.g., profit, payback period, etc.), environmental aspect (e.g., carbon emission/footprint, water footprint, etc.), and social aspect (e.g., safety and health, risk, job opportunity, etc.). This research involved process integration and optimization. The processes can be integrated in order to increase the sustainability. An optimum integrated process can be determined by developing a mathematical approach which can be solved by commercial optimization software (i.e., LINGO, GAMS).

Biomass Processing and Integrated Biorefineries: I work on biomass processing and integrated biorefinery. This included pre-treatment and different conversion technologies. In addition, these different conversion technologies could be integrated to form an integrated biorefinery. A mathematical approach will be developed based on a superstructure, which showing all the possible process pathways using different conversion technologies, to determine the optimum integrated biorefinery.

Sustainable Resource Management: I work on sustainable resource management with considering the sustainability aspects. This research work included development of resource conservation network (RCN) that involved three typical elements, which is material reuse/recycle, regeneration, and waste treatment for discharge.

Sustainable Value Chain Synthesis: I work on sustainable value chain synthesis. This research included development of superstructure of value chain, development of novel approach for value chain synthesis considering the sustainability aspects.

Life Cycle Optimisation: I work on life cycle optimisation. This research included development of product life cycle using superstructure approach, development of mathematical approach for life cycle optimisation considering the aspects of sustainability.

Waste Recovery: I work on waste recovery. This research was incorporated with the concept of Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA), which can quantify the waste streams into monetary units. In addition, this research involved determination of cost associated with waste streams that to be recovered.

Techno-economic Evaluation: I work on techno-economic evaluation. This research included investigation on the feasibility of processes. In addition, economic, technical, and environmental performance analysis of processes also included to examine the feasibility and viability of process implementation.

More info
My research interest is on developing a sustainable waste management scheme via biological route. Some examples include deriving value-added products from lignocellulosic waste via fermentation and biopolymer production rom waste substrate by using mixed microbial culture. I am also interested in the field of molecular biology.

My research is about the production of cellulase and ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass by co-culturing filamentous fungus and yeast using in situ saccharification and fermentation system. Pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass, search for suitable filamentous fungus strain to be co-cultured with yeast and optimization of in situ saccharification and fermentation system are the current focus of my research.

Besides, I was also involved in research which produces biodegradable plastic from the byproduct of biodiesel industry. The related molecular techniques involved DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, agarose gel electrophoresis, qPCR and next generation sequencing (NGS).
