Chef Hafiz Scores Win for Ruemz Hotel

Chef Mohd. Hafiz Adam or simply known as Chef Hafiz of Ruemz Hotel proves that even underdogs can do wonders as he finished a credible third place at the 5th Nestle Golden Chef Hat Award 2012.

Competing against 14 other professional chefs from numerous hotels across the country in the grand final held at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, Chef Hafiz’s second runner-up feat is the first win for Ruemz Hotel, a boutique hotel under Taylor’s University School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (TCHT) in a culinary competition.

Chef Hafiz, who is satisfied with the result, hopes the win will put Ruemz Hotel in a better position in the eyes of the public. “Compared to other hotels in the finals, we are considered a small and relatively new hotel so to win the third prize should help to bring up Ruemz Hotel’s name as more than just a training hotel.”

“It was the first time I’ve competed in a competition individually and there was a lot of pressure on me and I hope the win can serve as an inspiration to my students to not underestimate themselves,” said Chef Hafiz, who is also RM1,000 richer with the third place finish.

Mr. Neethiahnanthan Ari Ragavan, Dean of TCHT is extremely proud of Chef Hafiz’s achievement and believes that this is only the beginning of many more good things to come for Ruemz Hotel. “Chef Hafiz’s feat at the competition has proven that Ruemz Hotel and its restaurant, Temptation is not just a place where students can go for internship, but they can be rest assured that our trainers are qualified and award-winning ones.”

“I hope the achievement will stir the students and other chef lecturers’ spirit to bring more glory to the school.”

Chef Hafiz first started his career at Hotel Istana in 2007 and became a lecturer in a local institution before going back to the industry by joining On the Table, World Cuisine Restaurant in 2011. He joined Temptation, a restaurant under Ruemz Hotel’s management August last year due to his passion for teaching.

Ruemz Hotel is an 82-room boutique hotel established under TCHT as a research and experimental hotel which goes beyond the boundaries to ensure that hospitality and tourism management is more than just providing good customer service. It acts as a product review laboratory for the hospitality industry, providing an avenue for the school to conduct research on the hospitality sector. It is also a training platform to the students at TCHT. Temptation is a restaurant operating under the hotel where it serves not only breakfast and lunch for the hotel guests, students and staff on campus, but also do catering services.

The 5th Nestle Golden Chef Hat Awards is presented by Nestle and co-organised by Chefs Association of Malaysia (MAH) and Taylor’s University. A total of 180 professional chefs from the industry took part in this year’s competition where only 15 of them qualified for the finals.
