Taylor’s Business School student, Jonathan Pereira seized the day when he was granted the Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Award (MSEA) on October 18, 2012 alongside fellow recipients who have gained admittance to well-known and prestigious universities in Malaysia and all parts of the world. This year the recipients came from Taylor’s University, London School of Economics, King’s College of London, John Hopkins University, Carnegie Mellon University, Nottingham University and International Medical University.
Going against the natural grain of more popular business majors like Accounting or Marketing, Jonathan chose to specialise in Human Resource Management as he enjoys the dynamics and process of working with people. He believes that the role of Human Resource Management will be inherently important in contributing towards organisational performance and success. Currently pursuing the Bachelor of Business (Hons) Human Resource Management, the second year degree student described his sense of happiness as the best thing that has ever happened to him. Having attained good results for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia with a score of 8As and 2Bs, it was no doubt that Jonathan aced the interviews for the Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Award.
“My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and I badly needed a scholarship to ease the financial burden of the family. Things did not go well for me as my applications to local universities were all rejected. Hence, enrolling in a private institution was the only option I had. In a span of three years, I have applied for scholarships at numerous organisations but none of it went through. Driven to succeed in life, I refused to give up and kept on trying. In 2011, I stumbled upon the Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Award on the Internet and submitted the application but failed to be selected. Within the same year, I repeated the same process and this time around I was awarded the scholarship,” said Jonathan Pereira.
The Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Award is the culmination of a rigourous selection process that is based on scholastic achievement, leadership and personal qualities. Among the criteria that Jonathan had to meet was to have a good command of the English Language, both written and oral; excel in extra-curricular activities and possess leadership qualities. In addition to being among 22 recipients who received the Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Award, Jonathan had to pass through two stages which are the first and second level interviews. In the first level interview, Jonathan was assessed based on his character while in the second level interview, he was given the stress examination and tested on his general knowledge.
Constantly being challenged by the environment, Jonathan is also active in extra-curricular activities and has taken up several leadership roles in school and during his foundation studies at Sunway University. Jonathan was lauded for his personal attributes such as having the gift of the gap, being able to communicate his ideas, confident, well read and knowledgeable in world matters. With this, Jonathan captivated the panel of judges consisting of professors, psychologists and representatives of Maxis Berhad and successfully walked through the interviews.
“With the aim to add value in the people I meet, I chose to study Human Resource Management at Taylor’s University which is the pathway to achieve my goals and an opportunity for me to make an impact in the field of human resource. Maxis Berhad has provided me this opportunity to have a holistic education in a conducive environment built with good facilities at Taylor’s University. I believe that the Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Award and Taylor’s University will help me to be marketable in future and give me the edge to shine,” exclaimed Jonathan Pereira.
Jonathan further added that studying at Taylor’s University is indeed a wonderful experience with constant motivation and support from lecturers and the positive environment that it creates for its students. In addition, the industry experts brought in to share their experience and thoughts with students allows them to understand the current issues, trends, strategies and latest technology used in the business world.
