Professor Perry Hobson, the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement, was invited to speak about global rankings at the 2nd EduTECH Philippines Exhibition and Conference in Manila. He had previously been a session Chair at EduTECH Philippines, and also invited to be the co-ordinator of the Tertiary Leaders Track at EduTECH Asia in Singapore.

His presentation “From research to employment, investing in measurable outcomes to drive global rankings” focused on what Taylor’s University had been doing to raise itself in the QS Asia Ranking. Over the last three years, Taylor’s has moved from 250 up to 179, and now to 150. Furthermore, in the QS World Subject Rankings for Hospitality & Leisure, Taylor’s University has most recently climbed from being ranked number 29 to number 21 in the world.

As Professor Perry Hobson noted, “There are just ten factors that contribute to the QS Asia Rankings, but the reality is that 50% of the ranking is weighted to just two measures - an assessment of reputation by academics, and an assessment of reputation by employers. However, that doesn’t mean you can forget or ignore those other measures” adding that, “it is important to understand what rankings can measure, and what they cannot”.

Taylor’s University has been one of the fastest rising universities in the Asian rankings. Professor Perry Hobson was also invited to speak at the QS-APPLE 2017 conference on “Leading a Young University to Success”. This year’s EduTECH Philippines conference was held at the SMX Convention Centre in Manila, and attracted some 3,000 delegates - with international speakers coming from Canada, The Netherlands, USA, Singapore and Japan amongst other countries - (Global Matters 2018)
