With the aim to help motorists to drive efficiently and save fuel, Team Taylor’s comprising nine students with a mix of degree and diploma students, emerged first runner-up alongside Team Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) and UCSI University who won as the champion and second runner-up respectively. Competing against five universities to find creative ways to promote awareness through Shell’s Fuel Save campaign, ‘Target One Million’, Team Taylor’s walked away with their cash prize of RM 5,000 and a plaque from Shell Malaysia.
The campaign which ran from October 22 to November 1, 2012 garnered support from academics and students of Taylor’s University through its many activities and were educated with Shell’s Fuel Save Tips. One of the key activities which drew attention and got the Taylor’s community excited was watching more than 20 Taylor’s University School of Communication lecturers dance to the popular Korean song ‘Gangnam Style’. The parody was specially written with lyrics based on the FuelSave Tips by Shell Malaysia.
Other activities organised for the campaign include a speed-reading contest where contestants were challenged to read aloud the 15 FuelSave Tips as fast as they can with the fastest reader walking away with RM 50. A tweet booth was also set-up to encourage the spread of Shell’s designated 15 FuelSave Tips. Twitter accounts that have tweeted what they would do to save fuel with the hash tag “#FuelSaveTips” were able to claim free cookies and candies from the booth. Other activities that were conducted were Real-life Fuel Save game, poster competition, Zorb Ball, Quiz show and a Pledge Canvas.
Among the prizes being offered during the campaign was a reserved parking bay, USB flash drives, cash, cookies, Starbucks vouchers, notepads and highlighters.
“The students have put in a lot of effort and dedication to this competition and although we did not emerge as the champion, I’m proud of their achievement,” exclaimed Ms. Karmini Narayanan, Programme Director for the Diploma in Communication, Taylor’s University School of Communication and Lecturer Advisor for Team Taylor’s University.
“Regardless of who emerges Champion, to me, all of the participants are already winners for putting their passion, effort and commitment into this competition and we at Shell truly hope this has given insight into the working world and a rich experience to the students as they forge ahead in life,” said Tuan Haji Azman Ismail, Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd.
A simple luncheon was organised on December 3, 2012 at The Bee, Publika to celebrate the winners and to thank the participation of all colleges in this competition. Also present at the event were Datuk Nuraina Samad, Managing Editor of New Straits Times, Ms. Jacey Lim, Managing Director of Ogilvy Public Relations and Mr. Jonathan Lim, Group Account Director of JWT Malaysia.
