Turning Ideas Into Reality

Taylor’s Business School (TBS), through BizPod – a business incubator serves as an ideas bank that provides specialised training modules and receives monetary support from corporate organisations, which are channeled to fund the business plans, organised its inaugural Business Prototype Showcase, aimed at nurturing future socially responsible entrepreneurs among its current students.

Themed ‘Turning Ideas into Reality’, this showcase provided students with a platform to develop business ideas and create prototypes that were presented to a group of industry professionals and academic experts. As the main sponsor of this showcase, Startup Malaysia together with TBS will help the winning teams to transform their business prototypes into successful enterprises.

The event was opened to both diploma and degree students at TBS who are currently taking the ‘Entrepreneurship’ module as their elective.

Robin Cheng, chairperson of the Business Prototype Showcase as well as lecturer of TBS, strongly believes that such event can add values to the students’ learning experience, on top of just learning the theories to be an entrepreneur.

“With business associates from IBM, Ventura Partners, New Era Strategic Thinking and Startup Malaysia as the sponsor as well as members of the judges panel, the prototypes showcase allows students to exchange ideas and network with the industry partners. The opportunity to present their business ideas in the form of prototypes to these professionals also serve as a great exposure for the students to continuously explore new ways to convince the industry partners to agree and support their plans – and subsequently turning them into reality,” said Robin.

The Business Prototype Showcase was divided into three categories, namely the ‘Best Creativity and Innovations’, ‘Best Business Concept’ and ‘Best Presentation’.

Participating students were judged via stringent criteria, which encompassed areas including interesting idea concept, innovativeness of business ideas, social impact to the community, value proposition such as sustainability and profitability, market competitive advantage as well as team dynamics. The grand finale and award presentation ceremony was held on 31 May 2013.

Winners of the three categories of the Business Prototype Showcase walked away with exclusive invitation to attend training programmes organised by StartupMalaysia.org as well as opportunity to intern at StartupMalaysia.org as project executives to further enhance their knowledge and skills in establishing new business start-ups in Malaysia.
