Postgraduate Funding

We offer various research-related postgraduate scholarships for students enrolled in our masters and doctoral programmes at Taylor’s University.

As we believe, research can help shape the future. We want to support students involved with our postgraduate research programme financially so that they can become effective researchers that contribute to the needs of our community.

Listed here are the types of postgraduate funding that Taylor’s University offers.

Taylor’s Research Excellence Scholarship
Students interested in pursuing their Master’s / PhD’s studies at Taylor’s University in any of our postgraduate research programmes may apply for the Postgraduate Scholarship. This award is offered to support research in all areas of studies in the University and to instill excellent values amongst postgraduate students academically and socially. Award recipients are expected to devote their efforts to research and publishing articles as well as participating in University events and activities and getting engaged in various non-academic activities like community activism, charity work or educational services.
 
Scheme Entitlement Eligibility Criteria
Scheme A - PhD
  • 100% tuition fee waiver for a maximum of 36 months (full-time study)
  • 100% thesis examination fee waiver
  • Monthly stipend of RM 2,300
  • Conference allowance of RM 3,000
All the other fees are covered except  for enrolment and visa-related fees
  • Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA ≥ 3.33 and Master’s Degree (Coursework / Mixed mode) with CGPA ≥ 3.50 or by Research mode from any recognised local/foreign university
  • An applicant with publication in Citation Indexed Journal (CIJ) will have an added advantage
Note: Recipients must have:
  • one article submitted by the end of semester four; and
  • one article accepted and one under review in Scopus and/or International Scientific Indexing (ISI) journals before graduation
Scheme B -PhD & Master's
PhD
  • 75% tuition fee waiver for a maximum of 36 months (full-time study)
  • Monthly stipend of RM1,900
  • 100% thesis examination fee waiver
Master's
  • 75% tuition fee waiver for a maximum of 24 months (full-time study)
  • Monthly stipend of RM1,500
  • 100% thesis examination fee waiver
International Students - International Student Charge and first year International Student Annual Fee are waived for both PhD and Master’s
PhD
  • Master’s Degree (Coursework/Mixed mode) with CGPA ≥ 3.50 or by Research mode from any recognised local/foreign university
Master's
  • Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA ≥ 3.00 from any recognised local/foreign university

Note: Recipient must have one article accepted in Scopus and/or International Scientific Indexing (ISI) journal before graduation.
Scheme C -PhD & Master's
  • Up to 100% tuition fee waiver for a maximum of 24 months (Master’s) - 36 months (PhD) (full-time study)
  • Only applicable when a potential candidate is accepted into a funded research project carried out at Taylor’s University

PhD
  • Master’s Degree (Coursework/Mixed mode) with CGPA ≥ 3.00 or by Research mode from any recognised local/foreign university
Master's
  • Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA ≥ 3.00 from any recognised local/foreign university

Note: Recipient must have one article accepted in Scopus and/or International Scientific Indexing (ISI) journal before graduation.
Scheme D -PhD & Master's
Up to 50% tuition fee waiver for a:
  • maximum of 24 months (Master’s) – 36 months (PhD) for full-time study; and
  • maximum of 36 months (Master’s) – 48 months (PhD) for part-time study
Applicable to:
  • industry professionals (non-academic profession) attached to organisations/ firms in service related to the field of study
  • academics who are attached to an educational institution
 Potential candidates require recommendation from their organisation / firm / institution
Candidate must meet the admission requirements (academic and English language proficiency) for the relevant research degree.

ASEAN Tourism Scholarship 
ASEAN Tourism Scholarship is open for application by nationals from ASEAN member countries, to pursue postgraduate research studies (Master’s / PhD on areas related/ relevant on ASEAN tourism. The research focus should be aligned to the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan (ATSP) priorities. 
 
Scheme Entitlement Eligibility Criteria
Scheme A - for PhD PhD
  • 100% tuition fee waiver for a maximum of 36 months (full-time study)
  • 100% thesis examination fee waiver
  • Monthly stipend of RM 2,300
  • Conference allowance of RM 3,000

  • Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA ≥ 3.33 and Master’s Degree (Coursework / Mixed mode) with CGPA ≥ 3.50 or by Research mode from any recognised local/foreign university

Q2The Scholarships in Q1 are applicable to whom?
  1. Applicable to eligible local and international students commencing from January 2019 intake onwards. Should a student defer to the following year, scholarship offers may be revised to the prevailing scheme applicable at the new intake date.
  2. Student must have secured an Offer Letter of Admission from Taylor’s University.
  3. This scholarship is applicable for study at Taylor's University in Malaysia only and is not applicable for the period of study at overseas partner universities.

Q3. What are the closing dates for scholarships application?
The scholarship application will be accepted throughout the year. However, there are deadlines for admission and scholarship application submissions. If a student wishes to enroll into a programme prior to the approval of scholarship, the student requires to bear the fees for that particular semester. International students will need to take into consideration of visa application processing time of 8-12 weeks before intake commencement date. Q6What do I need to prepare if I am shortlisted for interview and what is the evaluation process like?
Step 1 The shortlisted candidates are required to deliver a 15 minutes Power Point Presentation on the research proposal submitted to the Centre for Higher Degrees by Research (CHDR).  This will be followed by Q&A by a Panel of Evaluators.
 
The Scholarship Evaluation criterion include the following:
  • Academic Excellence
  • Quality of Research Proposal     
  • Communication, Interpersonal and Leadership Potential 

A panel involving the Senior management of the Faculty evaluates the application, CV, supporting documents and recommendation form to shortlist the candidates for Scheme D. shortlisted candidates may require to attend an interview if the panel wants.
 
Step 2 The Interview session conducted by a Panel of Evaluators on weekdays 9:00am-5:00pm Malaysian time.
 
Step 3
 
The candidates are notified on the outcome of the scholarship application via email by CHDR as per the timeline stipulated in Q3.
 
Step 4 If awarded, scholarship recipient is to indicate acceptance of offer of scholarship to CHDR via email within 5 days from the date of notification.  The scholarship recipient is required to sign an agreement before the commencement of the programme.
 
Note: All decisions by Taylor’s University are final and no further appeals shall be entertained.

Q7If I am successful with my scholarship application and I am a local student, what type of fees would I still have to pay?
  1. Enrolment fee 
  2. Partial tuition fee for Taylor’s Research Scholarship recipient during the scholarship tenure. This will vary according to the quantum of scholarship awarded.   
  3.  Thesis submission fee

Q12. Is there any bond of service for any of the scholarships offered in Q1?
No.

Q13. If my scholarships application was unsuccessful, what other financial aid option do I have?
You may apply for Graduate Research Assistantship subject to the availability of grants by your Principal Supervisor.
 
Q14. Is it possible for me to apply for more than one scholarship?
You may apply for more than one scholarship if you meet the eligibility criteria of each scholarship. 
However, only one scholarship will be offered subject to the decision of the approving committee and availability of the scholarship.

Q15. Is it possible for me to apply for admission to the university and a scholarship at the same time?
Yes, you may submit the admission form and scholarship application form at the same time.
However, scholarship application will be processed upon confirmation of admission into the Postgraduate Programmes (Research) that you have applied for.

Q16. Is it possible for me to apply for a scholarship if I hold a conditional offer?
No.
 
Q17. When should I submit my application to study at the University in order to allow sufficient time to apply for a scholarship?
Refer to Q3 for the timeline.
 
Q18. If I change my course of study will it affect my scholarship application?
If you change your course of study after you were being offered a scholarship, the scholarship awarded will become void. You need to apply and go through the process again for the new programme applied.
